Fred, I didn't think I'd solicit emotions that strong from you regarding the SUV's. I thought you'd remember that I'm 100% certified True Blue and you'd just chuckle at my comment.
Sorry for taking you to that place. I was just being light hearted.
Like Trevor said. Ford has come a long way and does put out good products.
Like you said yourself, if you're going to keep cars past 5 years, some can require additional attention.
I still have a 2006 Fusion that my son uses at university, 226 000 kms. We've had the power steering pump replaced, some leaky gaskets, and a few rust touch ups, but overall I think it's been a great car.
As for those transmissions on the Focus, that's pretty much a case of Ford putting too good of a transmission in those cars and having it backfire on them. Those are twin clutch performance minded transmissions and meant to be driven aggressively. They are similar technology to F1.
Unfortunately, most people driving Focuses are people who try to maximize fuel consumption and baby the cars (and transmissions) so the transmissions develop issues. They jerk, they whine, rough shifts, etc. Then reliability takes a hit because they were not meant to be babied.
It is what it is. I have 2012 Focus for my daughter to travel to work, but I went manual shift. Fun little car to drive!
