Anyone else use Michelin X Ice winter tires?I found from day 1 the grooves should be deeper.I put the old syle nobbies on the wife's car and they work great. And not that noisy at highway speeds.
Used those quite a bit on police cars.
And bought a set for personal car some dozen years ago.
I found they worked well.
They have a lot of sipes and a soft rubber compound, which is good for winter traction but wears fast.
Those sipes are what make that humming sound you hear.
Engineering for one problem cause a bit of discomfort on another level.
Note: Any winter tire on pavement will always be louder than most summer/all season tires.
It’s the nature of the beast.
I found them excellent on ice or hard packed snow.
However not the best in deep snow.
I also had opportunity to use Good Year Ultragrip Ice on police cars.
Better in deep snow without giving up too much on ice.
Better in slush also.
For all around winter performance, tread life and cost, I think the Good Year is a very good tire.
Was my favourite between the two on police cars and is now my default go to for personal vehicles.
My F150 and wife’s Escape both have them now.
For the truck it has a different name.
Wintercommand, but same basic tire and tread.
For strict winter specific use, the industry leaders are Nokian Hakkapeliitta and Toyo GS series with nut shells.
We sell a lot of both at the dealership.
They are both premium (Industry code for expensive) and they both have ultra soft rubber, which gives traction but melts almost before your eyes.
Regular driving, you only really get one season out of them.
The more they roll n pavement, the faster they melt.
