Thought of the day.

Last Monday, took my 08 F150 to my Mechanic to get Thermostat changed. In the 8 years I have owned truck, i never had to change it. At Idle, would only blow cool air not hot. Once you start driving it would blow hot air.

Get a call from shop a few hours later, the metal thermostat housing that is attached to the plastic intake manifold was badly corroded and when the Thermostat that had probably been on engine since new, was removed, the metal housing broke.

Ford Dealer advised that they do not sell that part, comes with a replacement intake manifold that they sell for $800.

My garage was able to locate a used housing at a Salvage yard for $75 plus tax.

When they installed it on my intake manifold after they properly sealed the part with silicone the night before, as soon as they started the engine, it leaked antifreeze. (problem was old intake manifold).

Luckily, I was able to get the Intake manifold that the Salvage yard had removed the housing from the day before for another $100 plus tax. The manifold as well as the thermostat housing were in like new condition).

I'm picking the truck up this afternoon having saved $600 on parts (plus tax). If the used parts weren't available, I could have had one shipped from Halifax, new with warranty for $475.

The truck is 11 years old , and certainly doesn't owe me anything. :FordSmile

Goes to show a little research is worth it. Also understand a few good used places to look for parts can be worth it.
I was in one of my work trucks this morning and it has a broken mirror. maritime auto salvage will sell for $250
OME will be $600 plus, they look identical, so on 2011 work truck I will but the aftermarket as well and save a few bucks.

Had the car out of the garage today.Purring like a kitten.

Lots of good used parts are available with a little digging. Our local Kenny u pull has been my “go to “for getting the old Jetta on the road.

We are getting a Kenny U Pull in Moncton. Finally a junkyard that let's you take off your own parts and not charge you a fortune for them.

This is great news! When/where?
