[h=2]1968 Ford Mustang 2+2 Fastback[/h]
Ford completed the first redesign of the legendary Mustang for the ’67 model year with improved dimensions to allow the installation of a big-block – the Thunderbird 390. The most noticeable design changes were the larger/deeper grill mouth and concave tail lights. Ford then provided minor changes for the second model year in ’68 that focused on safety such as the two spoke energy absorbing steering wheel, shoulder belts, and side markers. These Mustangs had serious muscle grunt for the street with a 390 GT and a 4-Speed manual transmission having quarter mile times of approximately 13 seconds at over 105 mph.
Away from the showroom, the Mustang received a mega marketing holt of popularity when the 1968 Ford Mustang GT Fastback was featured in the Hollywood film “Bullitt”. The movie featured Steve McQueen, the highest paid Hollywood actor of the time. The film contains arguably the most well-known and very best car chase of all time which has become a cinema legend that all car chase scenes have been measured against. The high speed muscle car chase through the famous streets of San Francisco saw good cop Steve McQueen in a Highland Green 1968 Ford Mustang 390 GT Fastback outduel the bad guy hitmen in a Black 1968 Dodge Charger 440 Magnum.
This 1968 Mustang Fastback was originally factory built and fully documented as an “S” Code 390 with a 4-Speed Manual Transmission and the GT Equipment Group that was purchased in Haskell, Texas. Its build was completed at Dearborn on June, 25, 1968. Today, this Mustang is an wonderful recreation of the famed Highland Green Mustang from “Bullitt” that will satisfy your desire to be cool-like-McQueen. It's powered by a rebuilt 390 “S” code engine backed by a 4-Speed manual transmission complete with Hurst Shifter. The wheels delivering the power are the American Racing Torque Thrust Ds as used in the motion picture, with bite from BF Goodrich Radials. There are numerous exterior, interior upgrades and subtle changes to complete the “Bullitt” transformation as per the movie car. Some of which include; removing the familiar Mustang pieces including the GT Fog Lights, the running-pony emblem, the Mustang lettering, and GT badges. It has body color side moldings and on the driver’s door is a Yankee Metals mirror painted in body color that replaced the stock Mustang side mirror. The rear taillight panel is Satin Black, as are the taillight bezels while the rear valance has no back up lights and the GT exhaust holes are plugged just above the exiting straight dual pipes. The interior is Deluxe Black, the GT floor console has been eliminated and there is the fold down rear seats. In addition, this Fastback has a fully detailed undercarriage. The rear suspension has been fully upgraded to a “Control Freak” triangulated four bar with coilovers complete with rear sway bar. Front suspension is also upgraded to “Control Freak” with updated control arms complete with coil overs.
This ’68 Bullitt Mustang honors the legend of one of the most recognized muscle cars of the era and is a stunning tribute to one of the greatest and most sought after movie cars of all time. See the transformation process here.
