2019 California Special Race Red

Amazon actually. Had great ratings and they seem to care about the quality as was visible in the packaging. Tried to get gorillas from TDOT and they upped the price on me after ordering by $50 bucks as the 40 pack was no longer available. I was ordering some for Jason as well as he wanted some. They were 15 percent off as well. I believe the price may have gone up again

I got my wheels all cleaned up last night. Not a happy camper....lesson to myself and everyone that doesn't do this. ALWAYS take a date stamped pictures of all 4 wheels before taking wheels in to get new tires put on. I have side shots but not close enough. All 4 wheels now have damage because someone didn't use the correct machine or wasn't careful during the removal or install. Wheels where in perfect condition prior to this. Wheels were super dirty when I picked them up so I needed to wash them to see this. I have used this particular shop in the past with no issues. I have reached out to them and I was told to reach out to the manager on Monday as he is out. At this point its a their word against mine. I will keep the name of the company out of it for now to give them a chance to address my concerns.

That sucks hopefully the manager will have some integrity and own up to this mistake

Wow, hope it works out, good lesson for us all.
I think something like this can happen so fast and easy.
and we have all got wheels back dirty
Yes I agree. Why I didn’t question it when the shop hand gave them to me. I didn’t have the stuff to clean them right there either. These I must say where worst then normal as far as dirty. Like they were left in the mud. Not normal. Doesn’t make it any better and I know for a fact that whoever did these knew they did it. There is no way you would not know.

Probably wasn't done on purpose, but it's pretty sketchy to try and cover it up like you wouldn't notice and not take responsibility. Part of it comes down on the work ethic of whoever is doing the job and how much they GAF, and the other comes down to what the management deems as acceptable conduct for the employees. Changing tires on a Corolla or Camry used as transportation differs greatly from a car guy's tires and wheels. The Carolla or Camry owner probably wouldn't notice and likely wouldn't care. I'll buy Marc's comment about it slipping out of someones hands ...but that happens once, not on four different tires.

Hope things get worked out to a successful resolution.

Yeah I agree it could have slipped I guess. Never thought of the dragging motion. The reason I think tire machine and removal of old rubber might be the culprit is that all 4 wheels have a spot that is scratched way worse in a certain area. 2 have clear coat completely off about 1 1/2” long rough aluminum 2 others scratches I can feel with my finger nail but not as deep. Than a multitude of smaller surface scratches. I know one thing, I hand washed these wheels before putting it away in the fall and waxed them They were not like this.

I agree I don’t think it would be intentional. These are not your normal wheels as mentioned above. I also agree Usually the tire shops treat them with a different type of care. Possibly new worker? Wrong tools? Improper training.

I have reached out to a local guy I used years ago on my wife’s factory aluminum wheels that needed to be redone to see what he says so I have an idea. Conversation unfortunately on Monday could go one of 2 ways.

Just so we’re all on same page.
I was not trying to defend or minimize the damage or employees’ actions in my above post.

I used the word “slip” in diplomatic sense, and internally to myself in sarcastic sense.
You had to be there to catch my facial expression.

All 4 wheels damaged is outright incompetence and neglect.

It’s possible you have combination of both types of damage. Face scratched from being laid on floor and from the tire machine.
The deep gouges with clear missing are very likely from tire machine.
The lighter scratches, especially if they criss cross randomly in different directions, can result from being on floor.
If they’re mostly in same direction, likely machine again.

Like Mike says, they treated your wheels like they would a set of run of the mill steel wheels from a random daily driver, who’s owner would never notice. That’s sad.
There should not be double standards.

Also, not a defence either but simple fact, older and/or heavily used high volume machines can become more prone to causing damage.
With the heavy use and time all their pivot points and lock mechanisms wear and the tolerance of each point increases, making the machine less sturdy, especially the arm that they use to pry the tire off and then put back on.
It that arm is loose, even the best tire technician can damage wheels.

But that is where integrity of shop owner and front counter personnel comes in.
The shop has a responsibility to keep equipment in proper working condition.
The counter personnel should screen jobs and be honest with clients.
We have been having issues with our machine lately, I would hate to damage one of your wheels.

Can we reschedule to next week after we have our machine serviced?
Or, let me check with my best tire technician to see if we can work on your wheels safely.

And yes, poorly trained personnel and or personnel who don’t care.
Sometimes the poorly trained are trying their best but simply aren’t cut out for it.
The worse is the poorly trained employee who also doesn’t care.
The counter person knows the strength and weaknesses of their staff.

We will do those tomorrow because our best tire technician is not in today.

Sorry, this all too late for you, Charlie.
But there is worth in doing due diligence even with tire shops.

I’m very picky about that.
For example, when I did the new wheels on my ‘15, I highly doubted the equipment we had in one shop was up to the task.
I consulted and decided to send the wheels to our other dealership where they had newer, state of the art equipment, and competent personnel to do the job.
Plus I added an extra caveat that there was absolutely no rush.
I made sure this was clear so no one on the other end would rush the job through.
To avoid feeling the need on their part to give it to the next available technician.
And probably more importantly, to not do it until the tech is fresh and ready to do the job.
One thing we don’t think about is that nice expensive wheels place added pressure on the tech.
If it’s a professional tech that takes pride in his or her work, and cares, they know the minute they see the wheels.
Ok, I got to get my A game on.
Can’t screw up on these babies.
You know what, it’s been a long day and it’s getting late.
Now that I’m aware that I have these to do, I’ll just set them aside and do them tomorrow morning when I’m well rested and ready.

Hey Marc,
Your comments were not taken the wrong way at all. I appreciate everyone’s feedback that’s for sure. You make some good points in your above comments that’s for sure. I take the wheels of the vehicle for that exact reason. I am in no panic and the car is not coming out anytime soon. Plus I only have misled to worry about when it comes to the paint on the car and the actual wheels when they are taken off of the car. Very careful with all the tools used around as I am on no clock and take my time. I dropped them off at 9 in the morning and told him no rush car is not coming out anytime soon. Then we chuckled. I get a call at around 11:30 saying they were done. So that tells me that the next available tire tech went at it and possibly not the best guy.

I have bought 5 sets of tires from this shop and never had any issues at all in the past. The last set of chrome cobras i bought for the 01 had some slight surface imperfections in the chrome finish. Could barely see it. The tech they had on it boxed them back up and they called me to go look before he went any further. He says I know how expensive wheels are and I don’t want to get blamed that I danadged them. I respected that and told him to go ahead because I wasn’t shipping them back. I got these wheels back with no rim damadge besides the 2 spots he showed me. This is why I decided to bring the 2019 wheels into them as well. Covid has brought with it many staff challenges and I suspect that they are no different. The point is that I would have expected what I got if I went to a discount tire store that lets anyone do tires but I felt I was in good hands. I know wheel guys can fix anything but it is still not fun to have to do that to wheels that were pristine in the first place.

Oh well it is what it is. Hopefully the manager works with me…….

Wow!
Though break for you Charlie. 😞

The guy you had on the chrome wheels is the type of guy we all want working on our cars.
He’s the type that would self evaluate to determine if he’s ready to do expensive wheels or wait until the morning.
A rare commodity.

Be interesting to find out where he moved on to, and if he’s still in the industry.
If he still is, it might be worth checking out the shop he moved on to.
