Rare and relaxing

Rare for Vancouver Island. This Grizzly had to swim from island to island, from the BC mainland, to reach here. Apparently there are between three and seven Grizzly's that made the long swim, and are now living here.

You can see in this picture where the Island is closest to the mainland, and the islands they can use to cross. Very strong currents in some of the passes between the islands, when the tide is running, so I'm sure not all of the bears that try, actually make it.

You’re right, it was a detour.
I was alone and had no agenda so I went.
On the map, I saw a secondary road that I thought could get me back to the PCH south of Shelter cove fairly quickly without doubling back.
But when I drove by, I realized it was more of a fire road than a secondary highway.
I was not going to try it in the Fusion and low profile tires.
Doubled back all the way to get back on track.

Don’t regret though.
Was my first sight of sea lions, and that black sand was pretty impressive to see.
Never seen anything like it before or since.
