Some new tools have helped with the new model being released this year. Designed to fit the Coyote engine, but they can still be ordered for other engine choices, including big blocks.
Back in the day when I built mine, the 302 engines were mainly used, and the 87-93 5.0 Mustangs were the donor of choice for most builders. Reading through the FFR builder forums, it seems most are now using new parts to complete their builds, I presume as there isn't any suitable donors with the late model cars. This drives the build price up quite a bit. Probably double what it cost me.
It's unfortunate, as Factory Five Racing was originally created by two brothers who's intentions were to offer a chance for people on a budget to build a car of their dreams. I always liked that aspect.
Here's some info on the companies 30th anniversary model

A closer look at FFR's new MK5 Cobra roadster it's recent unveiling event.

Ford's 7.3 litre Godzilla big block engine was used in their hardtop example seen here. I expect the smaller brother Godzilla 6.8 liter version will also be used, and there's no doubt the Coyote engine will remain popular as a donor engines. The T56 tranny can be used with all of them, so a manual transmission in keeping with the Cobra sports car tradition, can be maintained.
To help keep the build costs down for buyers, I expect they were thinking that truck engines have become more and more readily available in the used engine and the auto wrecker market, so truck engines used as donor engines for their Cobra replica makes perfect sense.
Truck sales have been far outnumbering car sales. In 2023, the auto industry in the United States sold approximately 15.5 million light vehicles, with retail sales of about 3.12 million passenger cars and just under 12.4 million light trucks. Ford trucks were one of the leading sellers in the United States.
