I was a huge F-1 fan, following every aspect for years.
After all it is the pinnacle of Racing.
Several years back, to me F-1 Became a bit sterile.
Look of the cars, car was more of a factor than driver.
No real héros to cheer for. Well that part has changed.

18 Year old Lance Stroll at 18 will pilot a Williams - Martini F-1 Car.
Makes you at least want to take a peak, doesn't it.

The short story.

Yeah F1 starts this weekend. He seems like the real deal. They say his dads money got him there, but it's his skill that will kept him. It will be nice to see him do well. I don't think I will get up at 2:00 am to watch races like I used to, but will likely watch more.

Watched a segment on him (TSN maybe??....can't remember) and he has done really well in all the racing series he's been a part of. Should be interesting to see how he does in F1. Has my attention and I haven't had any interest in F1 for quite a few years.

Interestly enough, Stroll comes in at a time, F-1 is taking a step backwards.
Making the cars faster, with more down force and wider, also wider tire contact.
the original reason they stopped all of this was scary speeds. They lost fan base in the process.
So in 2017, F-1 is headed back to scary fast, which also puts more premium on the driver.
Interesting video

Also keep in mind he is in a Williams, which back in the day was a top team.
This has not been the case for several years, so winning is unlikely, its can he learn
and take this car beyond what it should do, be fun to watch.

That is one thing I hate about F1. Same teams seem to win every year. I realize a lot is based on how much money your team has but they would do much better if they could find a way to level out the playing field.

true to some degree, but do you want F-1 to be Nascar?
Or a spec series? F-1 is cutting edge, 90% of the technology
on our modern cars were born in F-1 because of the way it is.
Cars are designed from scratch each year. Teams trying to be on the edge
of the rules, example ABS braking. Was a team bending the rules to get an advantage.

Most people have no idea the money involved, top teams spend upwards of 400 million a year.
Small team gets by with 40 million LOL. The fact they can be inside if % rule to be aloud to compete is amazing.

Don't want it to be NASCAR but it would be nice if you weren't able to predict who was going to win every race lol. Hamilton - Vettel

you are correct, one of the reasons I lost interest.
Drivers became a bit sterile as well.
Maybe the change will bring back pure driving skill also.
Only time will tell. With a Canadian in the field will at least be a bit
more interesting.

Lance Stroll had a rough debut into F-1
Crashing in final practice, having to change a gear box among other damage,
gives him a 5 spot penalty. Getting out with only 6 minutes left in Q-1
He only goes 19th fastest, with the penalty, he will start last.

I was in Montreal, when Ferrari had the V-12.
Being young, I didn't wear ear plugs :)
When it came out of Senna corner, if you did not
turn your head with the car as it passed, it would physical hurt.
I have not heard anything like it since. Those days the rev'ed to I think 14,000
Even the V-8's going to 18,000 couldn't match the sound.
Incredible.

First race didn't go very well. Hopefully it gets better for him but top two are right where everyone thought they'd be.

After a rough a start in F-1
Lance Stroll, had his first podium finish.
with a 3rd at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
With a 9th last week in Canada, its looking a little better.

Didn't see the race but found out this morning that he landed on the podium. Hopefully just the start of what's to come for the rookie
