Daughters car

My daughters 04 VW golf 2.0 l gas will start but won't continue to run. No codes. It runs for 2 seconds and then shuts down. It will keep starting but the same thing happens.

Like with most fuel injected cars, when you switch on the ignition each of the injectors get a shot of fuel. It almost seems like it shuts off after burning that initial shot of fuel.

I am not much for electronic so I am pretty much stumped on this.

Sounds like engine immobilizer, security feature to do with key. Does she have a spare key she could try?

Fuel pump relay? Primes initially, but doesn't go back on after priming.
Faulty ignition switch? Loses power once if defaults from start, back to run position?

No spare key so the option to try that is out, unless I want to spend $300-400 for a new key.

Fuel pump relay sound like a possible culprit., going to have to roll up the sleeve I guess.

We all know a great mechanic who drives these, use to be top mechanic at Mercedes.
He once told me VW's were the most expensive cars to fix and maintain.

He likely could tell you whats wrong with it in about 5 mins.

My theory wil be the KISS principal. If that doesn't work, i'll have to engage the specialists.

Think we narrowed it down to the MAF sensor, runs without it anyway...

Helimech zeroed right in on the problem. Magic, with out the MAF dis-connected the car runs. Even when the car is started and the maf is reconnected it still runs. But try to restart it and same thing it will not run.

So I will try a new MAF $200 bucks and see if that helps.
